I just saw the new Pixar movie Inside Out last weekend and I think it is something you must see with your children. Not just because it’s a great movie (which it is) or that it’s fun for all ages (which it is). But also because it would be a fantastic springboard of conversation for you and your student. Check out these two articles for a review and how you can use the movie to have conversations about growing up, understanding our emotions, and the gospel.

As long as there have been teenagers, there have been those decreeing “life is just different for them than it was for us.” While much of the teenage experience is consistent across generations—the search for identity, community and independence while wrestling with self-doubt, isolation and dependence—there is truth to the fact that things there are things that are different today. These 7 things are significantly different for today’s kids and are definitely worth your attention as a parent.

Summer SuBS: God at the Movies!

This week all Sunday School classes met to enjoy a Congregational Breakfast together. Next week, we’ll be starting a new series for our middle school and high school students.

Summer SuBS: God at the Movies

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:1-2, NIV)

Throughout the school year on Sunday or Wednesday nights, we do bible studies called “Media Minutes.” Each week we take a look at something from culture–a commercial, music videos, clips from TV or movies–and examine to see if it tells us God’s Truth, the World’s Lies, or about Human Longings.

This summer, we’re going to be bringing that approach to Sunday school with a series called “God at the Movies.” Each week, one of our fine teachers will bring out a clip (or two) from a movie past or present–like Signs, It’s a Wonderful Life, or Bruce Almighty–and discuss what biblical truth it can teach us, complete with popcorn and movie candy! This series will be combined for middle school and high school students. For select movies we’ll also offer a full screening during the week leading up to the lesson.

Current Dates

May 31st: Signs, led by Jill Crocker

Come watch the full film on Saturday, May 30th @ 4pm at the Crockers (1805 River Park Dr, Germantown 38139).

June 7th: Remember the Titans, led by George Moseley

June 14th: TBA, led by Drayton Mayers

June 21st: TBA, led by Bob Pitts

June 28th: Congregational Breakfast

July 5th: Bruce Almighty, led by Adam Peterson

July 12th: TBA, led by Bob Pitts

July 19th: TBA, led by George Moseley

July 26th: Congregational Breakfast

August 2nd: TBA, led by Drayton Mayers

August 9th: TBA, led by Jill Crocker

August 16th: Fall Kick Off

Stay tuned to this page for more information about our movie selections from week to week and for special movie showings.

As always, please contact me if you have any questions or concerns about anything we’re discussing.

  • Announcing our new Sunday morning Bible Study (SuBS) Series!: Every week we publish an update so you can have a better idea of what your student is covering on Sunday mornings and so you can have conversations about it. This week our update also includes information about our Summer Series, “God at the Movies.” This week’s update can be found at http://youth.germantownpres.org/2015/05/subs-may-17/
    • Reminder: All Sunday School classes will be meeting together in the Activity Center for a Congregational Pot Luck Breakfast!

How are the kids doing? According to a lot of recent research, not great. This is an important article I stumbled across that describes how new research indicates that, among other things, during the school year teens have more stress than adults. The proposed course of action: more conversations about emotions and how we handle them. Highly recommend you read it through:
